Interconnected Smoke Alarms Installed Properly to Help Protect Your Home and Family
A working smoke alarm can provide critical early warning when a fire starts, but protection depends on having the correct alarms installed in the right locations. Old, damaged or poorly positioned alarms may not provide the coverage your household needs.
AME Electrical Contractors provides professional smoke alarm installation, replacement and testing across the Gold Coast and surrounding suburbs. We help homeowners, landlords, property managers and builders upgrade their properties with reliable, interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms.
Queensland is approaching the final stage of its smoke alarm reforms. By 1 January 2027, existing private homes, townhouses and units must have interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms. Properties being sold, leased or re-leased are already required to meet the upgraded requirements.
Compliant alarms must meet Australian Standard AS 3786–2014 and be interconnected so that when one alarm detects smoke, every interconnected alarm in the dwelling activates. This gives occupants in other rooms and on different storeys an earlier warning.
Under the current Queensland requirements, compliant smoke alarms must be positioned:
Correct placement also considers ceiling shape, corners, lights, fans and air-conditioning vents. AME Electrical Contractors assesses the property and positions each alarm according to the applicable installation requirements.
A fire may start at the opposite end of the home or on another level while occupants are sleeping. With standalone alarms, people may not hear the alarm until smoke has travelled further through the property.
Interconnected alarms communicate with one another. When one alarm activates, they all sound, providing an alert throughout the home and giving occupants more opportunity to leave safely.
Interconnected smoke alarms can communicate through electrical wiring or an approved wireless connection. The most appropriate option depends on the property’s construction, existing alarm system and available wiring.
Hardwired smoke alarms are connected to the household electricity supply and include a backup battery. Existing hardwired alarms must be replaced with suitable hardwired photoelectric models, and their electrical installation must be completed by a licensed electrician.
Eligible existing properties may use compliant photoelectric alarms powered by sealed, non-removable 10-year batteries. We assess your property and explain which installation method is appropriate before providing a recommendation.
Queensland rental properties classified as domestic dwellings must already have interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms. This includes houses, townhouses, units, apartments and secondary dwellings such as granny flats.
AME Electrical Contractors helps landlords and property managers inspect existing alarms, replace expired units and upgrade properties where required. We can coordinate access with the authorised contact and provide clear information about the work completed.
If you are preparing to sell a property, checking the smoke alarm system early can help prevent last-minute delays. Existing alarms may be the wrong type, incorrectly positioned, too old or unable to interconnect with one another.
We can assess the property, identify what needs attention and complete the required installation or replacement work. Our team ensures that the system is carefully fitted and tested before the property changes ownership.
Smoke alarm requirements should be considered during the planning stage of a new home or substantial renovation. Early planning allows hardwired cabling and alarm positions to be incorporated before walls and ceilings are completed.
AME Electrical Contractors works with homeowners, builders and other trades to plan, rough-in, install and test smoke alarm systems as part of the broader electrical project.
Smoke alarms do not last forever. Queensland guidance requires compliant smoke alarms to be less than 10 years old, and an alarm may need earlier replacement if it is damaged, painted over, repeatedly faulty or unable to pass testing.
Our electricians check the manufacture date, condition, power supply, interconnection and location of existing alarms. Unsuitable units can be replaced with compatible photoelectric models designed to provide reliable coverage throughout the property.
Smoke alarms should be tested regularly and kept free from dust and obstructions. Batteries must not be removed, and an alarm should never be disabled to silence repeated unwanted activations.
If your alarms chirp, activate unexpectedly or fail during testing, AME Electrical Contractors can investigate the system. We check the alarm condition, electrical supply, interconnection and placement before recommending the appropriate repair or replacement.
Hardwired smoke alarm installation involves working with the property’s electrical system and must be completed by a licensed electrician. Our team follows applicable Queensland requirements, manufacturer instructions and relevant Australian electrical standards.
Once installed, every alarm is tested to confirm that it activates and communicates with the remaining interconnected units. We also explain how to test and maintain your new system.
We assess the property before recommending a smoke alarm solution. You receive a clear explanation of the number and type of alarms required, proposed locations and the installation method.
AME Electrical Contractors provides an upfront quote before work begins. If an unexpected wiring problem or access issue is discovered, we discuss it with you before carrying out additional work.
